1. Our Commitment

Food for Thought Heathfield CIC is committed to safeguarding:

  • Children

  • Vulnerable adults

  • Volunteers

Safeguarding is everyone's responsibility.

2. Our Role

We are a community food redistribution project, not a care provider.

Our safeguarding role is to:

  • Remain alert to concerns

  • Provide a safe environment

  • Signpost individuals to appropriate support services

  • Report concerns appropriately

We do not investigate or manage cases directly.

3. Safeguarding Principles

We follow key safeguarding principles:

  • Protection from harm

  • Early identification of concerns

  • Respect and dignity for all individuals

  • Partnership working with relevant agencies

4. What We Look Out For

Volunteers are encouraged to be aware of:

  • Signs of abuse or neglect

  • Changes in behaviour or wellbeing

  • Individuals appearing at risk or in distress

5. What Volunteers Must Do

All volunteers must:

  • Report concerns immediately

  • Never ignore safeguarding issues

  • Never investigate independently

  • Maintain confidentiality

6. Reporting a Concern

If there is a concern:

Step 1: Speak to the Shift Lead or Safeguarding Lead immediately

Step 2: Complete an Incident Report

Step 3: Safeguarding Lead assesses and takes action

If someone is in immediate danger:

9. Boundaries

Volunteers must not:

  • Offer personal support outside the organisation

  • Share personal contact details

  • Conduct home visits

  • Provide financial assistance

All support must remain within the CIC's structure.

10. Confidentiality

Safeguarding information is:

  • Shared only on a need-to-know basis

  • Stored securely in line with data protection laws

11. Safer Recruitment

We follow safe recruitment practices including:

  • Application process

  • Induction and training

  • Ongoing supervision

12. Training

Volunteers receive:

  • Safeguarding awareness training

  • Ongoing guidance and support

13. Policy Review

This policy is reviewed annually or following any safeguarding incident.
